“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2″
Opens: Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
Director: Sanaa Hamri
MPAA: PG-13
Starring: Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively

Carmen, Tibby, Lena and Bridget are back again after three years of rotating the “Magic Pants.” They have all graduated from high school and are now off to college. With each girl following her own distinct interests, Carmen is at Yale, Tibby is in film school at NYU, Bridget’s on soccer scholarship at Brown, and Lena is studying art at Rhode Island School of Design. It is always a nice transition to the real world when your friends get into prestigious programs at top-notch schools;)

After one year at college, Carmen (America Ferrera) is excited to come home and be with her buddies. Her mom is newly married, expecting a baby, and moving which leaves Carmen a bit lost and adds to her sour attitude. I mean really what is with the big chip on her shoulder? She does have one reason to be disappointed. After clearing her summer schedule, she finds that Bridget is going to Turkey on an archaeological dig, Tibby has to stay at NYU to finish an incomplete film assignment, and Lena is taking summer classes. With this discovery, Carmen decides to take up an offer to study theater in Vermont. Her plans are to get more experience behide the scenes but after an impromptu audition she is cast in a principal role of Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale.” Carmen’s acting abilities are directly proportional to her ever growning crush on her leading man. Carmen also finds out that some friends are not worth having in your life.

Tibby (Amber Tamblyn) has a steady relationship with her man Brian, and they celebrate their 10 month anniversary with a night of …. A terrible mishap causes a preggers scare, which causes Tibby to run from her relationship with Brian. Everywhere she goes she sees screaming babies and weary mothers.
Bridget (Blake Lively) is having an interesting summer unearthing skeletons in Turkey. This causes her to unearth her own unresolved feelings surrounding her mother’s death and sickness. Before leaving for Turkey, she finds dozens of letters written to her by her grandmother that her father had hidden. Eventually she leaves Turkey and stops by Alabama to meet her grandmother, Greta (Blythe Danner), and leaves with a better understanding of the dynamics between her father, mother and grandmother. Her relationship with her father is on the mends.

Lena (Aleix Bledel) travels to Greece to attend a funeral and meets her former love’s (Kostos) new wife. Broken-hearted, she moves forward by taking her art to the next level. She finds a new love interest in the real life model from her class, and attempts to forget Kostos. However, Kostos shows up at Lena’s school and shares that his marriage was loveless, based on a lie, and annulled. Lena, however, can’t see where they can pick up from there.
Well, as fate would have it the, “Magic Pants” have been nabbed by Lena’s jealous sister, Effie. I spent the majority of the time watching Effie and trying to decide if it was Selena Gomez from “Wizards of Waverly Place,” but it is a young star named Lucy Hale. (I digressed) Effie is off to Greece with the pants and then the pants get lost, blown away, stolen or…who knows.
The missing “Magic Pants” cause all four girls to come together again in Greece. Well, I don’t want to give it all away, but all four young women find exactly what they are looking for despite the “Magic Pants”.
“The Sisterhood to the Traveling Pants 2″ really showcases these four young actresses amazing acting abilities. I have seen some really bad Chick Flicks this summer as the “List” continues to grow, but Sisterhood-2 is definitely not one of them! Enjoy!

“Sex and the City”
Opens: Friday, May 30th, 2008
Director: Michael Patrick King
MPAA: R
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Christopher Noth, Jennifer Hudson

In true Carrie style, I sit in front of my apple computer in my knickers to give you the details on “Sex and the City” the movie. I felt lucky to have been able to catch a sold-out pre-screening tonight (Thursday) at 7:30pm. I did however have to count the cost because the season finale of “Lost” aired tonight. Well, I have to say that not all was “Lost”. I thoroughly enjoyed “Sex and the City” the movie!
“Sex and the City” begins with one of Carrie’s famous monologues that brings us up to date on the lives of our four women. As follows:
The final season of “Sex and the City” (TV) left us with Carrie in Paris with her Russian lover, Aleksandr. Just when we thought this New Yorker was going to leave the Big Apple for good, Mr. Big sweeps in and brings her home. We learn Mr. Big’s real name is John James Preston. His gallant act confirms his feelings for Carrie and this is where “Sex and the City” the movie picks up.
In the last season, Charlotte marries her divorce attorney and goes through an adoption of a daughter from China. During the course of the movie, Charlotte is able to conceive. This is a wonderful thing since Charlotte has gone through tough times with fertility methods. She has one of the funnier mishaps in the movie which the fan next to me missed out on because she had to run to the bathroom….the irony. (note…the movie is 2.5hrs. long so, watch your soda intake)

Miranda & Steve are married and are raising their little boy, Brady, out in Brooklyn. Miranda & Steve’s relationship is a bit rocky because of a period of sexual abstinence. Steve confesses to an affair and this sends Miranda down the long road of anger and mistrust. One of the over-arching themes of this movie is “Forgiveness.” Miranda’s drama has an impact on all those around her and ultimately aids in the wedding fiasco half-way through the film.
Samantha is West coast lovin in the movie. She and her boyfriend Smith are living it up in California. Samantha’s relationship with Smith is a stretch for her….monogamy (gasp!). We start to feel she has a heart, but it’s Samantha. She has a lustful heart and is tempted back to her old ways due to the over-exposed (really over exposed…for a split second) neighbor.

Now back to Carrie & Big! They are finally engaged after 10yrs. She is truly in love! Carrie is also excited to embark on her less financially & spatially strapped future. She dreams of bigger closets filled with designer shoes. Her wedding plans are big! The ceremony is planned to take place at the New York Public Library, but as we all know things go horribly wrong for both Big & Carrie.
All the girls head to Mexico on what would have been Big’s and Carrie’s Honeymoon. This is a really heart wrenching part of the movie. We see Carrie at her worst and it feels as real as it gets. To help the audience and Carrie out of this depression there is the unwaxed Miranda and “run for the bathroom” Charlotte.
Now through out the last couple of seasons, Carrie’s career has taken off. No Longer is she just writing the column for The New York Star. She has had several gigs for fashion mags and a book tour. This is where the need for a top notch (Oscar winning) personal assistant comes in the form of Louise (Jennifer Hudson). However, Louise’s main job is to help Carrie rebuild the old single life she had once known. After being jilted, Carrie has a ton of things to sort out….literally.
Louise gives occasion for Carrie to reflect upon her younger years and the hope she once held in “Love.”
If you think I gave too much away then just wait. This could be the Chick Flick to end all Chick Flicks! “Sex and the City” is a charmer and has that movie magic that TV viewers had sensed all along. “Sex and the City” fans won’t be disappointed. This movie has you laughing, crying & gasping to the very end and doesn’t leave any room for a “Sex and the City II.”
Enjoy!

” Made of Honor”
A Wedding Chick Flick in Theaters Friday!
Opens: Friday, May 2nd, 2008
Director: Paul Weiland
MPAA: PG-13
Starring: Patrick Dempsey, Michelle Monaghan, Kevin McKidd, Kadeem Hardison, Chris Messina

“Made of Honor” stars Patrick Dempsey as Tom, a ladies’ man who steers clear of commitment and the institution of marriage. After all, Tom has witnessed his father marry/divorce several times over. His faithful date to all his father’s weddings is Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) who has been the sounding board and watchful eye in Tom’s ever revolving love life since college.
When Hannah is called away on business to Scotland,Tom has a period of soul searching. He misses her and comes to the realization that he loves her. His plan is to start a committed relationship with Hannah on her return from Scotland. To his surprise, Hannah has gotten engaged to a handsome Scotsman named Colin (Kevin McKidd).
Hannah in her excitement drops the second bomb on Tom. She wants him to be her Maid of Honor. Ouch…Tom hides his embarrassment with a smile and agrees to do her the honors. Tom’s close friend Felix (Kadeem Hardison) advises him to win Hannah’s heart by taking on the role of the perfect MOD. He helps Hannah with all her duties including gift registry, bridal shower, and trousseau shopping. (watch as Dempsey shows off his juggling skills with the Chinaware)
Hannah, Tom and the whole bridal party soon travel to Scotland for the wedding. There we discover that Colin is a nobleman, owns a castle, and is heir to a prestigious family owned distillery. Oh, and Colin can also sing!? With a rendition of the traditional Scottish tune “Love is Like a Rose,” Hannah believes even more strongly that she has found the perfect man.
Well, not to give it all away but, there are three weddings in “Made of Honor.”
I had two flashbacks with “Made of Honor.” It so closely resembles the relationship dilemma of “My Best Friends Wedding” that everyone will make this connection. Also, the introduction of MOD (Maid of Honor) as a new word took me all the way back to the “Clueless.”
Although “Made of Honor” is predictable, they do a good job of making us forget that Tom is a real jerk and that Hannah deserves better. Tom really isn’t made of Honor, but it is easy to forget this while faced with his dreamy good looks. The physical humor, the beautiful Scottish countryside & castle, and the good looks of Dempsey & Monaghan slightly redeem this wedding Chick Flick. Lastly, watch out for the completely unnecessary crude jokes.
In a strange coincidence Michelle Monaghan actually had her best guy friend as her Maid of Honor in her own wedding prior to signing on for this film.

“ Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”

Opens: Friday, March 7, 2008 (Limited Release)
Director: Bahart Nalluri
MPAA: PG-13
Starring: Frances McDormand, Amy Adams, Tom Payne, Lee Pace, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Shirley Henderson
Ahh…the glamour of old Hollywood Chick Flicks for the modern day viewer! “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” is the story of a down on her luck British nanny,Guinevere Pettigrew(Frances McDormand), who steals an opportunity to work for aspiring actress and singer Delysia Lafossa. Delysia(Amy Adams) isn’t in want of a traditional nanny; instead she is in need of a social secretary. Delysia is having trouble juggling her love life, which is somewhat of a career for her.

Miss Pettigrew finds herself working for a woman involved in a love quadrangle (is there such a thing). Delysia is torn between three men who each provide her something quite different. Delysia is desperate for stardom and finds her chance for fame in Phil (Tom Payne) who is an up and coming producer. Nightclub owner, Nick (Mark Strong) provides Delysia’s lavish lifestyle and, Michael (Lee Pace) a talented musician that melts her heart. How is a girl to choose?!

Along the way, Miss Pettigrew finds herself with a glamorous makeover, new friendships and a budding romance of her own. The only problem is that her love interest, fashion designer Joe(Ciaran Hinds) has a fiancée, Edythe(Shirley Henderson). Edythe seeks to expose Miss Pettigrew’s lack of social status and, in Edythe’s defense she is Joe’s fiancée. Ahh…but,we still have to root for Miss Pettigrew who is another wonderful example of the ugly-duckling we have grown to love in Chick Flicks.

Interesting Facts:
“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” is based on a Winifred Watson(British) 1938 novel.
Shirley Henderson is a familiar face from Harry Potter. She plays “Moaning Myrtle.”

“Over Her Dead Body” New Chick Flick in theaters this Friday

Opens: Friday Feb. 1, 2008
Director: Jeff Lowell
MPAA: PG-13
Starring: Eva Langoria Parker, Paul Rudd, Lake Bell, Jason Biggs, Lindsay Sloane
Ever year women are given the option to slip away from Super-bowl Sunday activities to head out for the annual Super-bowl Chick Flick. Last year it was “Because I said So,” starring Diane Keaton. This year we have “Over Her Dead Body,” starring Eva Langoria Parker. Hopefully those who love Parker on Sunday night’s “Desperate Housewives” will get their fill as the writer strike has taken most shows off the air.

“Over Her Dead Body,” follows the story of Kate (Parker) who is tragically killed on her wedding day by her angelic ice sculpture. Her mourning fiancée Henry (Paul Rudd) seeks the help of a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell). Ashley hasn’t had much luck conjuring up the dead and so, is surprised when Kate comes to haunt her. Problem is Ashley is falling for Henry and Kate will not pass on quietly.

This sounds horrible…. not the movie…but the idea of being haunted by Eva Langoria Parker. Anyone who can continue to look sixteen while in their thirties…certainly depends on the powers of darkness.
